Tooth Decay is No Minor Health Problem!
It affects about 95% of the population. Dental disease is the most widespread disease that exists; yet it is the easiest to prevent.
Seventy-seven years of research and more than 35 years of everyday use have shown a proven, safe way in which damaging dental disease can be reduced by up to 65 percent. That means 2 OUT OF 3 CAVITIES CAN BE PREVENTED!!!
This method is the adjustment of natural levels of fluoride in community water supplies, and it is called "FLUORIDATION."
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral, which is found in varying amounts in food, soil, plants and animals, as well as in human blood, bones and teeth. It is also present in various amounts in all water supplies.
Fluoridation is the process of adjusting the fluoride level of a water supply to contain about 1 gallon of fluoride for every 1 million gallons of water.
This amount makes the teeth stronger and sharply reduces tooth decay, especially for those who drink fluoridated water from early childhood. At this proper level, there are no side effects such as staining of the enamel.

How Does Fluoride Build Strong Teeth and Bones?
Natural substances in the body combined with fluoride while the teeth are forming to make them harder. Fluoridation results in fewer cavities, fewer lost teeth, and fewer false teeth.
The bones of the body also benefit, because they become stronger and do not break as easily. Stronger teeth result in:
- Less dental decay
- Fewer dental appointments
- Lower dental bills

Are There Other Ways to get Fluoride?
Water fluoridation is not the only way to get fluoride into the teeth. For example, fluoride applied to the teeth by a dental hygienist or dentist, costs $25-$50 per person per year and can reduce decay by 30-40%. Brushing with a fluoride toothpaste cost $9 per person, per year, and can reduce decay by 15-30%. However, these ways are much more costly and not practical for everyone and are not as effective as fluoridation.
About half the U.S. population drinks fluoridated water. Generations of people have consumed optimum fluoride throughout their entire lives. The only effects have been much healthier teeth and bones, and lower dental bills.
Thousands of scientific studies prove that water fluoridation is safe and effective. Never before has any public health measure been tested on such a large scale, for so many years, under such strict standards and proven itself so well.

But Isn't Fluoride a Poison?
Fluoride is no more a poison than other nutrients. Many substances such as oxygen, water, iron, iodine, and calcium are good for us in proper amounts, but may be harmful if too much is taken into the body. In order to get a lethal dose of fluoride, you would have to drink 50 bathtubs full of fluoridated water in a single day, and that's not possible!
With fluoridation, the fluoride level is carefully monitored in the community water supplies to make sure that the proper amount of fluoride in the water is maintained. Fluoride added to water does not change the taste, smell, or appearance of the water.
Nine out of the ten largest cities in the U.S. enjoy the benefits of fluoridation. Unfortunately, many Americans still do not drink fluoridated water because they are fearful of false claims made by a few people.
The simple truth is that THERE IS NO "SCIENTIFIC ARGUMENT" AGAINST FLUORIDATION. For many years, it has been found to be perfectly safe, inexpensive, easy to administer, and very effective in reducing tooth decay. The survival of the myths against fluoridation is one of the remaining triumphs of quackery over science in our generation.
Fluoridation cannot take the place of a well-balanced diet or daily brushing and flossing. It cannot do away with all dental bills, but it can prevent tooth decay. Support the people in your community who are working to promote fluoridation.
