For many years patients, just like you, have secretly wished for a whiter, brighter smile. Now you can have it! Your dentist can prescribe a carefully monitored tooth whitening and brightening system especially for you. It's fast, easy and painless. But first, there are some things you need to know...
It's actually a bleaching process that reverses discolorations of enamel (the outside layer of tooth structure). The system uses a mild solution retained in a custom fitted appliance that slips over your teeth.
What Causes Tooth Discoloration?
There are many causes. The most common include: aging, consumption of staining substances, trauma (injury), tetracycline (antibiotic) staining, excessive fluoride, nerve degeneration and old restorations.

Who may Benefit from Tooth Whitening?
The process may not be for everyone. This can only be determined by your dentist, following a thorough oral examination and diagnosis. The tooth lightening system is ideal for patients who have healthy, restored natural teeth and would like to have a whiter, brighter smile. Once the cause of your tooth discoloration is detected, your dentist can recommend which whitening system will work best for you.
In some cases where patients have existing bonding, crowns, or tooth colored restorations, they may elect to have these replaced following completion of the tooth whitening procedure.

How is Tooth Whitening Done?
- During your diagnostic visit, impressions are taken of your teeth. From these, your dentist makes custom fluid-holding appliances. (Most patients prefer to have both the upper and lower teeth whitened.)
- At your second visit you are fitted with the appliance, which is virtually undetectable at a social distance. You will also be given one or two bottles of tooth whitening solution. For best results, it may be necessary for you to have your teeth cleaned prior to starting the tooth whitening process. You will be given specific instructions on how to administer the solution and how often to wear your appliance.
- To obtain maximum esthetic results, you must return to the office for subsequent monitoring visits through treatment. As always, you should use diligent home care methods of brushing and flossing. You may also be given a special toothbrush, toothpaste, gel or mouth rinses to use for the duration of your tooth whitening program.

Are there any Dos or Don'ts Associated with Tooth Whitening?
Yes. While participating in this program you should avoid all citrus fruits and juices (especially apple juice), soft drinks (except diet lemon-lime soda), and antacids. That's because these items change the acidity level of your saliva in such a way that may cause mild mouth irritation. They can also slow down the tooth whitening process.
Patients with decreased saliva flow may require a slightly longer treatment time. High blood pressure medication, tranquilizers, decongestants, antihistamines or radiation treatments may also cause decreased salivary flow. Caution: Pregnant or lactating women should not use the whitening system. Use of chewing gum and tobacco products should be discontinued during the tooth whitening process.
For maximum results in the least amount of time, you should wear your tooth-whitening appliance for the prescribed number of hours each day, replenishing the solution as recommended by your dentist. Make sure you remove the appliance when eating, and that you place it in water when it is out of your mouth. It's also important that you not wear the retaining devices constantly, as your teeth and gums need a chance to "rest."

A Final Note of Assurance
Tooth whitening is a relatively new process in cosmetic dentistry. It employs a solution that has been used for quite some time in the treatment of gums and other oral soft tissues. Long-term studies on the effects of these particular treatment systems are not yet complete.
The whitening process is most effective for mildly discolored teeth. Darker stains... such as those caused by antibiotics... take longer to respond to treatment. The degree of whiteness will vary from patient to patient, and with the duration the system is used; also with how faithfully the instructions are followed.
To stay whiter and brighter your teeth may require periodic "touch ups." All you have to do is wear your appliance with the whitening solution for several days to a week. Additional tooth whitening solution is available from our office.
We're here to help you maximize your smile. If you have any further questions, please give us a call. The whiter, brighter smile you've always dreamed of can be yours in just a few weeks!
